POEMS OF PEACE

NEWBUTTONPINK.GIF (519 bytes) Desiderata - A famous poem and declaration of what is essential to one's life and how to live peacefully.

NEWBUTTONPINK.GIF (519 bytes)"Thanks for ... a list of truly amazing and encouraging initiatives from all over the world.  Reading it, Auden's poem, "Sept 1, 1939" (the day WWII broke out) comes back to me:

Defenceless under the night
Our world in stupor lies;
Yet, dotted everywhere,
Ironic points of light
Flash out wherever the Just
Exchange their messages:
May I, composed like them
Of Eros and of dust,
Beleaguered by the same
Negation and despair,
Show an affirming flame.

Each one of the initiatives you have told us about is one of those points of light. Those of us attempting to live lives of justice, to be "the Just" for our time, are exchanging messages of action and hope.  Thanks as always for your part in this."  Courtesy of Donald Grayston, PhD, Director, Institute for the Humanities, Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, BC  V5A 1S6, Canada; tel: 604/291-5516 / fax: 604/291-4504; website: www.sfu.ca (Academic Programs - Humanities).

"It is better to light a candle than curse the darkness.
Lights of peace become circles of peace.
Circles of peace become communities of peace.
Communities of peace become a peaceful world community."
Bob Stewart

And finally, a quote from Robert Greenleaf that seems on the point:

"We stand in a crisis and we can be bearers of the torch or we can carefully husband a little flame and keep it from going out a little longer.  In the few minutes that I have had to talk with you I have tried to hand you a torch.  Will you accept it?"

"... my family lost a member to violence last week and had a forced reunion as a result.  This is the second such occurrence in my family in the last 15 years.  The first incident was hushed because of the embarrassment.  Yet, after this incident, there was some talk and it turns out that these two men were born on the same day...  Wrote a poem about it to help me connect the details and feelings.  I'm including it here.

Questions? Brothas Wid Guns

Took the children
to the open
white tunnel
led them inside
asked them
to recall/record/recite
their dreams
and one by one
they retold
nightmares
about
brothas wid guns
coming to their
home/church/mall
to shoot
somebody
them
anybody
they mamas
daddies
and how they'd
take care
of the blood
take care
of the arm babies
once the
brothas had
gone.
Asked my chile
why he needs
a black metal
pistol
and he said,
somebody
might
take
his
ride
might
want what
he got.
Asked his daddy
why he
need a cold
black pistol
in the trunk
of his car
and he say
we in the South.
Asked where
was my cousin
and they whispered
his girlfriend
shot him,
but don't tell nobody.
Asked the
long legged baby
why she
was crying.
She say her
man hit
her sometimes
but don't really mean
no harm.
We forgot
the meaning
of harm
harm
harm
is hating the
self
self
hating
backfiring
into the world
everywhere
anywhere
rapidfire
harm
and we
never
learned enough
never learned
to walk away
harmless
in our hate
and life is crying
sleepless babies
life cries
and makes us
learn
forces us
to dry our oldest
tears and
learn life
that
lives
harmless
with ourselves
harmless
from
our own mirrors
whilst
we
can.
