Mr. Robert Stewart
Director
Canadian Centres for Teaching Peace
Box 70
Okotoks, Alberta  T0L 1T0

Dear Mr. Stewart:

Thank you for your letter of September 30, 1999, concerning the 2000 Culture of Peace and Canada's role in promoting a Canadian national culture of peace.

As you note, I have already provided information on CIDA's international activities with developing countries on this subject.  In addition, CIDA officials have consulted with various government departments, included the Department of Canadian Heritage.

No government department has been specifically tasked with taking a lead role in promoting a national culture of peace in Canada.  Instead, all departments are contributing to this objective as part of their capacity through various existing programs activities.  As the national and international components of the culture of peace are interlinked and interdependent, the activities of CIDA, through its international involvement, directly strengthen Canadian institutional and individual capacity for building and maintaining peace at home and abroad.

I hope you will find this helpful and thank you again for your letter.

Yours sincerely,

Maria Minna, P.C., M.P.
