Ministerial message for the 2nd annual conference on peace education in Canada

from the Hon. Sheila Copps, Minister of Canadian Heritage/Ministère du Patrimoine canadien, Minister responsible for the Canadian Commission for UNESCO, and Member of Parliament in Hamilton (where we held the conference).

Greetings to all those taking part in the 2nd Annual Conference on Peace Education in Canada.

J'aimerais saluer tous ceux et celles qui prennent part B la 2e conférence annuelle sur l'éducation pour la paix au Canada.

Canada is a country of peace. Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson first formulated the concept of peacekeeping-for which he won the Nobel Peace Prize. For almost half a century, we have played an important role in peacekeeping around the world. Our political and civil life is characterized by negotiation and the peaceful resolution of conflict. Canadians, who claim more than 200 ethnic backgrounds, co-exist peacefully. It is only fitting that Canada should become a leader in peace education.

Le Canada est un pays pacifique. Le Premier ministre Lester B. Pearson a été le premier B définir le concept de maintien de la paix, ce qui lui a valu le prix Nobel de la paix. Depuis prPs d'un demi-siPcle, nous avons joué un rôle capital dans le maintien de la paix dans le monde. La négociation et le rPglement pacifique des conflits font partie intégrante de notre vie politique et civile. Les Canadiens et Canadiennes, qui comptent plus de 200 origines ethniques différentes, vivent en harmonie. Il est donc tout B fait naturel que le Canada soit un chef de file en matiPre d'éducation pour la paix.

I would like to commend the Canadian Centres for Teaching Peace on their many initiatives to help raise awareness and advance the cause of peace in Canada and around the world. I wish you enjoyable and productive discussions as you consider ways to firmly establish an international culture of peace and help secure a "World Fit for our Children."
