What
is "Conflict Analysis and Resolution?"
Conflict
occurs in many contexts, from a vehement dispute between two individuals to a
cycle of violence between two ethnic groups. Conflict analysis and resolution is
committed to analyzing the sources of conflict, the ways in which conflict
changes over time, and the means for resolution towards meaningful and lasting
peace. The field of conflict resolution is a inter-and multi-disciplinary field,
founded in the 1950s and 1960s. The last ten years have seen exponential growth
in the number of degree programs and courses offered in universities worldwide,
as well as demand by employers for applicants with conflict analysis and
resolution skills.
The
Undergraduate B.A. or B.S. in Conflict Analysis and Resolution (CAR)
All
CAR students take a series of core courses that ground them in conflict theory
and analysis. Students will also learn practical conflict resolution skills.
Students take a series of gateway courses, which cover conflict resolution in
the arenas of interpersonal conflict, group/community conflict, and
international conflict. After selecting an arena of conflict as a concentration,
students choose courses from a variety of disciplines throughout the university
that relate to their concentration. The major also requires three credits of
field work, which can take the form of an internship, a service learning
opportunity, or study abroad.

The
Conflict Resolution Program offers a Master of Arts/Sciences Degree, which draws
from (and contributes to) theories and insights in the arts and sciences, as
well as preparing students for professional work. The program's three current
areas of emphasis are: Theory and Practice, Peace and Justice, and International
and Intercultural Conflict Resolution. For admission to graduate study, the
student's background and preparation should reflect an ability to pursue
graduate work in conflict resolution. It is not required that the applicant have
an undergraduate specialization in conflict resolution or any other specific
academic discipline. Because the program is broadly interdisciplinary, students
with any undergraduate degree are encouraged to apply for admission. Should the
student's preparation be deemed inadequate in certain areas, the student will be
required to overcome those deficiencies through formal coursework and/or
directed readings. All such work is separate from work toward the master's
degree.

Peace,
War, and Diplomacy Studies
B.A.
Program in Peace, War and Diplomacy Studies
Program
coordinator: Asst. Professor R. Pennington
The
purpose of a baccalaureate program in Peace, War, and Diplomacy Studies is to
offer an opportunity to examine, within a liberal and humanistic framework, the
origins and development of military institutions and the impact of those
institutions upon the social order. Intellectually, the program is intended to
promote critical analysis of phenomena relating to military and diplomatic
affairs. Practically, the program is especially intended to help prepare
students for a career in government service or for entry into graduate or
professional school. Professional military training is not a requisite part of
this curriculum. Rather, this academic program aims at providing an
interdisciplinary examination of the enduring and close interconnections among
military, political, economic, and social institutions. The creation of a
program in Peace, War, and Diplomacy Studies at Norwich University, an
institution which has long combined the best assets of a liberal education and
military training, can be viewed as an extension of a venerable tradition of
producing educated citizens who are prepared for their civilian pursuits and who
are knowledgeable about diplomatic and military affairs.
