1. SUMMARY

In celebration of Peace Champions in Canada and the United Nations International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Nonviolence for the Children of the World, the Canadian Centres for Teaching Peace will be hosting the Sixth Annual Canadian Peace Awards, November 11, 2005.  Awards will be presented in no less than 10 major categories for Canadian achievements in building a Culture of Peace and Non-violence, at home and abroad.  The presentations will also culminate in the fourth induction into the Canadian Peace Hall of Fame to be housed at the Canadian Centres for Teaching Peace and on its web site at http://www.peace.ca/peaceawards.htm

The Award categories will include peace achievements in government, business, the media, education, peacekeepers, peacebuilders in civil society, peace philanthropy, youth, and multi-cultural relations, to name a few.

The Award will be in the form of an engraved, soapstone 'Inukshuk'.  For millennia, massive stone figures built in the image of a human have stood silhouetted on the treeless Arctic horizons.  Created by Inuit people, these Inukshuks serve as guides to point out a journey or a safe passage.  The Canadian Centres for Teaching Peace believes this is a fitting Canadian symbol of the journey to safe and caring communities and world.

November 11 was chosen as it is Remembrance Day in Canada.  Each one of us has an obligation to the memory of the many men and women who died for our peace and freedom, to today's millions of needless victims of violence at home and abroad, and to future generations to do everything we can to bring peace to the world and preserve the integrity of this planet.  We know what to do, we just have to do it.  The awards will stress everyone's responsibility and potential influence in building peace in our families, communities and world.

Any funds raised in the promotion of the Annual Canadian Peace Awards will go to the creation of a Canadian Peace Institute and Peace Foundation.

3. CALL FOR EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST - ANNUAL CANADIAN PEACE AWARDS

a) Venue and host co-ordination

The Annual Canadian Peace Awards will take place annually on November 11.  Canadian Centres for Teaching Peace ("CCTP") would like to maximize the exposure of the event to Canadians, including television and media coverage.  Options may include any of the following: televising by a major Canadian network, cable TV, teleconference links to feed showings in Canadian Universities and/or Colleges utilizing school media resources, Internet coverage, alternate media coverage, etc.  CCTP solicits expressions of interest to out-source the hosting co-ordination and provision of venue for the event.  Proponents should consider methods of raising revenue through the advertising and sponsoring potential of the event, and attracting the maximum audience.  The choice of supplier will depend upon a number of factors including dedication to the nature and integrity of the event, ability to raise funding, past history, etc.

b) Judges

Awards will be decided by CCTP.  CCTP solicits expressions of interest by interested parties, or suitable nominations of others to act as judges which CCTP can pursue.  Due to the groundbreaking nature of the awards, suggestion for additional award categories, guidelines, etc. are welcome.

c) Sponsors

CCTP envisions that, either currently or in the near future, the Annual Canadian Peace Awards has the potential to be self-financing and to raise funds for a Canadian Peace Institute and Peace Foundation.  This would appear to be an excellent opportunity for public exposure for Not-For-Profit Organizations, businesses and others.  CCTP is also careful to ensure that the nature and integrity of the event is maintained.  CCTP solicits expressions of interest from Canadian individuals and organizations to co-sponsor the Annual Canadian Peace Awards.  Proponents should consider mutually advantageous methods of sponsorship.  The Canadian Centres for Teaching Peace is a not-for-profit organization and will fund and optimize exposure of the Annual Canadian Peace Awards within its budget constraints.

This is a Request for Expressions of Interest only, and it is expected that responses can be kept brief.  Follow up is subject to the responses received, and all responses will be answered.

The deadline for responses (Expressions of Interest) is July 31, however it would be appreciated if an earlier indication can be provided to CCTP.  Responses should be submitted, with any suitable background information, electronically to stewartr [at] peace.ca or to the Canadian Centres for Teaching Peace, Box 70, Okotoks, AB, T1S 1A4.
