Educating for Peace (E4P) is a citizen advocacy group that supports and promotes the teaching of peace and global education in Canada's schools - primary, intermediate and secondary. It is currently compiling the sixth edition of its RESOURCE GUIDE FOR SCHOOLS, a listing of tested peace education classroom materials and organizations that can help teachers reinforce this work. This year it is merging with its sister organization the GLOBAL EDUCATION NETWORK to produce an integrated website featuring these resources. As well, this academic year teachers from both organizations have been invited to show student teachers at the University of Ottawa's Faculty of Education practical ways they can integrate peace and global education in a number of disciplines and curricula. Educating for Peace was founded in 1983 during the cold war. Its mandate then was to counter the apprehension felt by students about the arms buildup and nuclear war with projects directed toward empowerment, media literacy, research and debate. These techniques are still needed, though peace and global education now encompasses environmental awareness, human rights, conflict resolution, global education, cultural respect and other facets of the long struggle for peace.
