Peace and
Conflict Studies
The purpose of
the Peace and Conflict Studies (PACS) program is to explore why conflict and
violence occurs, to understand how conflict can be managed, utilized, and
transformed by "collaborative decision-making" to accomplish
constructive ends, and to facilitate real-life, hands-on, "in the
field" learning of peace and conflict issues through Internship placements
with a wide variety of peace, justice, and development agencies. A theoretical
understanding of peace and conflict, as well as training in the practical skills
necessary to practice the techniques, are explored.
What is Peace and Conflict Studies (PACS)?
*
an interdisciplinary field of study concerned with various aspects of
human conflict
*
an exploration of peace, war, nonviolence, conflict resolution,
mediation, human rights, Third World development, mediation, and other social
justice topics
*
an opportunity to learn both in the classroom (with over 100 PACS-related
courses offered in nine participating departments) and through experience in the
real world (through the Internship program)
*
a course of study that recognizes equal value in both the concrete
techniques and the theories of peaceful social change
*
a chance to learn about peace and justice by taking courses in a wide
variety of university departments
*
a holistic approach to peace education

Peace Studies is
concerned with war and peace, violence and nonviolence, conflict and conflict
transformation. Peace researchers also study concepts of justice and the ways in
which people organize and wage conflict to achieve what they perceive as just
ends. By focusing on problems of conflict, particularly of a violent nature,
researchers attempt to improve our methods of analyzing and dealing with these
problems. Peace studies is an interdisciplinary field, encompassing subject
areas from the Faculties of Science and Social Sciences as well as Humanities.
