Allison M. Jones, MA

I am in my fourth year of the PhD program in Sociology at McMaster
University. My areas of specialization include race & ethnicity and
identity. Privately and in the academic realm, I have studied the work and
philosophies of Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr. since my teenage years.
I completed my BA Hons. at York University in 1997, and my MA at McMaster
in 1999. My Master's thesis included an exploration of the website
activities of the North American white supremacist movement on the
Internet. In that research, I became well acquainted with the antithesis
of peace, and philosophies extremely divergent from those of the 'peace
movement'. I am also serving my second term as Vice President of CUPE
Local 3906 (Teaching Assistants and Sessional Lecturers at MAC). My
portfolio includes serving as Chair of our local's Political Action
Committee, and as such, I work to mobilize our members and coordinate
activities in the campus and broader community surrounding social
justice, peace, political and labour causes. It is largely from this
perspective that I approach peace education - as a student, as a union
member, and as a fledgling activist.
